ZirkleOne is an updated version of Zirkle and is intended to replace it. Zirkle was among the first typefaces I developed and its strangeness was undoubtedly due to its early birth. The upper-case letters had a simplistic design; I formed them from sections of a circle, or rays within a circle. Zirkle was drawn as a stroked typeface using Fontographer 2.4.1 from Altsys. I released it as freeware in 1989. ZirkleOne is based on the design of Zirkle, but is drawn as an outline font and compiled in version 3 of Fontographer with Type 1 format.
In preparing this update, I made a number of stylistic changes, especially to the punctuation. ZirkleOne is a family with two weights, plain and bold. Unlike most of my faces, ZirkleOne does not include the array of Western European characters.
(My first release of ZirkleOne had a problem with Adobe's Type Manager. That problem should be fixed in this re-release.)
Conventional installation procedure uses Font/DA Mover 3.8 (earlier versions will not work!) to install the screen fonts into the system file. Then drag the files ZirklOne and ZirklOneBol into the system folder (do not rename them!). ZirkleOne will then appear on your font menus and automatically download to a PostScript printer. Unconventional (and better) installation uses Suitcase II or MasterJuggler.
The ZirkleOne family is shareware and costs $25.00. It is not worth that much, but if you pay, I will send you 25 PostScript typefaces I have developed, plus my catalog of additional typefaces. The enclosed MacPaint file illustrates the 25 typefaces which are (as of November 1990) included in this special offer. (As time passes, there may be changes.)
All typefaces in this collection are in Type 1 format. (Type 1 has several advantages over Type 3: files are usually smaller, they print faster, they are hinted, and they work with Adobe's Type Manager. On the other hand, they do not allow certain things allowed in Type 3 format, such as fills less than 100%, stroked characters, and characters built from complex composites.) With each face comes the PostScript printer file and screen fonts in from one to four point sizes. The entire collection comes on two 800K disks and contains about 1.5 megabytes of files. In two weeks you will receive 2 disks filled with interesting typefaces, all in Type 1 format. They may not be the same quality that you can buy from Adobe, but they are a lot cheaper. (If you like ZirkleOne but do not want another 25 typefaces, keep your money and enjoy it without guilt.)
ZirkleOne is copyrighted but may be distributed freely provided the following conditions are observed: 1) This Read-Me document must go with it; 2) No alterations are to be made to it; 3) No part of it may be extracted and used in another typeface.
